I had a quick question for you. I read some *qualifying* books within the past two weeks or three weeks–all in the month of April–The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, Camilla by Fanny Burney, and Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I was wondering if these could count for this challenge even though they were read before the official start date. It’s fine if they can’t, you do make the rules, but if they can that would be really great
No, I’m just going to say May onward. I had some in April, too, but I’m just going to begin with May 1. Sorry!
Right now I am sticking to the books that I can find on Projcet Gutenberg as I know that a lot of the books in the 2000 catagory are still popular.
I just posted a review of Ethan Frome at my blog http://jameswharris.wordpress.com/2008/05/14/ethan-frome/ for my May read. 1 down, 9 to go. This is a good challenge, and one book a month should not be too hard. I hope I can find 10 very distinctive novels to read.
I forgot to leave the URL for Candide. Sorry about posting it twice. Maybe you can get rid of the first one.
James
I just posted a review of Candide on my quilting blog at http://handquilting.blogspot.com/2008/05/voltaires-candide.html.
I love this challenge! Some of these books have been on my To-Be-Read list for years…
Hi-
I just wanted you to know that I changed my blog’s ID from Judy to Intergalactic Bookworm. Judy
Just posted my review of The End of the Affair. One down, nine to go!
To see the reviews of books I’ve read for challenge go to - Jottingsfromjan.blogspot.com
So far they are for May: The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie & Memento Mori both by Muriel Spark.
Just posted a review of The Age of Innocence on my blog

Posted a 101-word review of Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Paris on my blog

This is probably one of the easiest books to read on the list. Not that you shouldn’t challenge yourself with a “difficult” book, but because we all need some simpler stories to read now and then.
I just posted my review of Lolita on my blog!
Just posted my review of Never Let Me Go, which was my second book.
Sorry - if you could erase my entry number 43, I forgot to add the title of the book! I’ve reposted below it, thanks! I’ve read 4 books so far for the challenge and am trying to play catch up on my reviews!
For my June book I selected The Crying of Lot 49, but I didn’t like it, so I switched to Drop City by T. C. Boyle. I reported my reaction here:
http://jameswharris.wordpress.com/2008/06/21/my-kind-of-story/ by making a comparison of the two stories and why I liked one and didn’t like the other.
I also used 1,001 Books to Read Before You Die as a start of a website about classic booklists: http://classicbooklists.com/ - I’m collecting different recommended book lists to see how they overlap.
Jim Harris
Shoot! I messed up the review post on #52, it should reference (Spring Flowers, Spring Frost). I suppose that’s what I get for not reading the directions carefully!
I’ll post again when I finish the book. Great Challenge!
I’ve posted reviews for Middlesex and the link to a prior one for The Blind Assassin. I’m enjoying this challenge a lot!!
Just finished The Crying of Lot 49… Unlike Jim (2 comments above), I stuck with it.
But I agree with him! It’s not an enjoyable book. But it’s got it’s own weird atmosphere.
Review for ‘The Red Queen’

I used Mr. Linky to add my June review of Ethan Frome but it is no longer there nor am I still on the sign up sheet. However, here is my June review: http://themysterybookshelf.blogspot.com/2008/06/ethan-frome.html
STOP PRESS!!!
Hey there… just an update on the 1001 list. The list was revised in April 2008 and a new edition was published. I’ve got the new edition and a totally new spreadsheet at Arukiyomi’s blog.
Along with some cool new features, there are lists of both the revised 1001 books and those that were removed from the new 2008 list.
Still stoked that you linked to me in the first place!!
I love this challenge. I’ll have my list of ten put together by the end of the day, I hope!
I also read The Nine Taylors by Dorothy Sayers in May.
See my blog by clicking my name to see my reviews of The Grass is Singing by Doris Lessing and Underworld by Don DeLillo, two books I completed in June, 2008.
Did do the format correctly — sorry.
