(Another) 1% Well-Read Challenge
I hope everyone had fun with the last 1% Well Read Challenge. Even if you didn’t complete the challenge, if you read any books at all from the list, you are at least a little more ‘well-read’ than you were before!
The editors of the book 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die threw a kink into our challenge when they updated the books with new titles last year. So, I’ve got three options for you on this next challenge:
- Read 10 titles from the original list from March 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.
- Read 10 titles from the new list from March 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.
- Read 13 titles from the combined list (of almost 1300 titles) from March 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010. In other words, “What were they thinking dropping titles from Dostoevsky and Jane Austen?”
For all options, overlaps with other challenges are allowed, and you may change your list at any time.
I have begun to update the 1001 list HERE. Please note that the unnumbered books are from the new titles added. Unfortunately, I do not have all the new titles added yet but will be working on it in the next week or two. Asterixed titles are ones that were dropped from the new list.
Alternatively, you can go HERE for an Excel spreadsheet of the old list, and HERE for an Excel spreadsheet of the new list.
Happy reading, and may you be more ‘well-read’ this year than last!
To sign up, please leave your specific link rather than your general blog link. If you don’t have a blog, just leave the url blank or join in the comment section.

Having completed the 2008-9 challenge, I’m now signing up for the new one. My plan is to spread my choices across the centuries. I’ll be blogging my progress at http://anzlitlovers.wordpress.com/challenges/the-1-well-read-challenge/ as I go.
Thanks for setting this up:)

I’m in…thanks to my friend Stephanie Newton for inspiring me…
This looks like fun - now I just have to pick my books
I was hoping this one would come around again…I was too late to join the last. I am going with the third option. Is it OK to list the books as we read them or do we need to make a list beforehand? Thanks for hosting.
Yes, you can change your list at any time or add them as you go.
This sounds great! I’ve picked half my books…now what else shall I read? : )
Picked 20, going to try and doing 10 out of them. Should be a blast.
I’ve been waiting for this one. I can’t wait to dive in!
I finished my 10th book just in time, and I’m signing up for another 10. Thanks for hosting again.
“Even if you didn’t complete the challenge, if you read any books at all from the list, you are at least a little more ‘well-read’ than you were before!”…Thank you so much for saying that, as you made me feel oh-so-much better! Still, I’m determined to do better this time around.
Thanks so much for continuing this challenge. I’ve really enjoyed doing this although some of the books are hard & I could sure tell you a couple that ought to be pulled! LOL

Just found this challenge and am completely intrigued. Signing up! I haven’t figured out which 10 I’m reading but I’m going to try to stick with things I already own but haven’t read.
I just signed up but I left my general blog address before I read all the instructions! Sorry
Here is my challenges page:

Just found the challenge, and would like to sign up - though I don’t have a blog. Like Kris F I shall pick my books from the ones I already own but haven’t read (and it’s scary how many of those there are).
I’m in! First time but it sounds great. :o)
Didn’t get to participate in the last challenge, so I’m looking forward to this time around. Haven’t got my list together yet, but I’m signing up. Thanks for hosting!
how great! i am always looking for a good read. i’m happy to join this challenge.
I’m in. I’ve been meaning to read some of these books and haven’t got around to it.
Im in…looks like fun!!!
Well I looked and searched and can’t find a list that I can see as of yet but I will keep trying. I want to do this one. Thanks.
I’ve picked my books and I’m ready to go. What’s another 13 books on the TBR pile, after all…
A late comer, but I’ve decided to join!
I’m wondering, 3M did you sign up for this challenge yourself? I couldn’t find your list of books

I could not find the list that had the classics listed. I wished that I kept my list from last year. I was straightening my book blog out and deleted the list. My book blog is still messed up because we have been having internet connection problems and I bet that AT&T cringes every time my mom calls them! Thanks for your help. Judy

Admittedly, I’m nervous about joining this challenge. I so want to succeed though!
Oh, I forgot to mention that I’m doing the 13 titles between now and next March!
I’m going to try to be a better citizen and not drop out of sight like I did last year. To make this challenge even more fun, I’ve selected my 13 books at random.
Looking forward to it!

And I’m done with option#2: the one I began with.
Here’s the wrap-up.
Thanks so much for hosting this.
Hey. This looks like fun. I’m a little late starting, but I’ll make up for it!
I just found this blog and have joined two challenges. I love to read, and I blog about what I’m reading, So this is perfect for me. I’ve started several of these books but never finished them, so I’m going to include them. Since I joined so late, I figure that’s OK. Wouldn’t want to be accused of cheating!
I just found this challenge. I will be attempting the 13 books challenge. My list should be posted tomorrow.
I’m joining this WAY late, but I think I can read 10 books off the new list! I’ve read a bunch of the titles already, but I don’t want to cheat, so here goes!
Michelle — First, thanks so much for updating the 1,001 list. I really appreciate it. Could you please look and tell me if any of the following are on the list:
Lord Jim - Joseph Conrad
The Stranger - Albert Camus
The Maltese Falcon - Dashiell Hammett
I realized that Ulysses was due back at the library even before I began it & there’s only one copy so I can’t possibly start & finish it before the end of the year. However, I have read the above three but I believe they pre-date your work in progress. Thanks so much for checking on these for me.
Blessings!

I just realized that I had been doing this challenge and never posted about it. I’m going for 13 books and have completed 9. My link is now up. I’m really enjoying this challenge and having a link to the 1001 list is very handy, thank you.
