About

3M and her brother; Christmas 1971

1morechapter.com is dedicated primarily to books and the reading life, and is owned by 3M, otherwise known as Michelle by friends and family. A former engineer, math teacher, and English teacher, I am also the mother of two wonderful teenage boys.

I really enjoy being part of the book blogging community and participating in reading challenges. In addition to reading, I like to watch sci-fi TV and movies with my family. I also like to travel, play card/board games, and watch Denver Broncos football.

I have always been an avid reader. When I was a young girl, my mother would ask me to set the table or do some other chore and I'd always ask, "Just one more chapter?!" That childhood memory was the inspiration for the title of this site.

Publishers and Authors: I am only interested in being contacted about books by authors whose works I've read in the past and have received 4 stars or more.

  • Hi there, Just wanted to let you know that one of the other Canadian Book Challenge participants is a fellow named Steve Zipp who recently wrote a book entitled Yellowknife . He's looking to send other participants a copy. If you're interested you can read this http://stevezipp.blogspot.com/2007/10/canadian-book-challenge.html for the details.

Wow-I just checked out your 2007 reading list; I can't believe I've found somebody who reads even more than I do! I've put your site on my Favorites list, and I am looking forward to reading through 2008 with you!

  • 3M

Thanks, Michelle! (And I'm a Michelle, too!)

  • HI Michelle - I love the background to your site! and like you, I am discovering the world of book bloggers online, and it's true, they feel like friends when we chat about books! So.....i've added you to my bookmarks, and will add this site to mine, since I already have you as 3M for the book challenge. Anyway, I hope you have a Merry Christmas and so sorry about your flooded basement. It's pouring rain here in Ottawa after our record snowstorm last week - 1 foot and a half of snow in one day! - and I'm hoping that as the water runs down our street and into our driveway, the sewer won't back up. Now I have to go do my list for worst reads of this year, which I haven't done yet......Happy reading in 2008 to all of us!!

  • Your last line made me laugh; I used to say to my mom: "one more page!" or even "just let me finish this paragraph!" and then go on as long as I could.

Michelle, I just found your blog today and have already enjoyed what I've read. I was wondering were you found your book/bookshelf graphics? It looks great.

    thanks,
    adam

  • What a gorgeous web design! I love the background! I've always been an obsessive avid reader also and am trying to turn my kids into avid readers also, lol!

When will you be reading, "Swish: Maria in the Mourning?" There are 23 five-star reviews on Amazon.com

  • Michelle,

First off - thank you so much for your contributions to the reading community!

I was looking for your e-mail, but I couldn't ifnd it, so I figured a comment would be good enough. Would you be interested in doing an interview for the BookSwim.com blog "The Literary Life"? I'm interviewing book reviewers, authors, and book reviewers to give our members a 360 view on reading. Your blog is of interest to our readers so I thought that our readers may want to get to know you better before I provide them links to follow you.

Please contact me back if you are interested.
    Thank you
    -Nick

  • Hello Michelle - I'm Fiona and I'm a novelist from the UK published by Snowbooks.

I'm getting in touch to invite you to take part in my 'Blogsplash' next March, when 1000 blogs will simultaneously post the first page of my novel, Thaw. The novel will be published online in its entirety over the following three months as a bit of an experiment.

You can find out more at http://www.fionarobyn.com/thawblogsplash.htm , and if you have any other cunning marketing ideas I'd be very happy to hear them.

    Thanks for your time,
    Warmest,

I just found your blog as I searched for information about the author Xinran, and her book Sky Burial. I loved this book and Xinran's other book, The Good Women of China.
I will definitely refer to your book lists and reviews from now on, especially now that our winter rains have commenced and I anticipate spending more hours inside.

    Hi:

I found the Countdown challenge you have here and absolutely love it.

I'm starting a new group at the first of the year on Good Reads and would love to use the Countdown Challenge there. Would it be possible for me to do so? I would be sure to let every one know where the idea came from, as well as the web address to your wonderful website.

    Sincerely,
    Southpaw

You sound like a busy person and a see you're not accepting any books from publishers. But I am an author and even if you don't review my book it sounds like one you may like to read.

Val is just having a drink in a coffee shop. She's a regular college student, trying to cope with a strange an irregular ability to save people's lives. Bud is an elderly gentleman trying to live with the passing of his wife as well as premonitions that allows him to know certain things that will happen in the future of certain people. And he knows something scary about Val's future. When he sits down next to her and holds her hands it will start a friendship that both of them are desperate for. It will also set off a chain of events that will dramatically change both their lives, from the gunshot that's just seconds away to a heroic battle with fate and death.

"Coffee and Fate" is available at bbotw.com, amazon.com or borders.com or if you send me an address I would gladly send you a complimentary copy. Thank you for your time and consideration.

  • Dear 1morechapter,

Chapter 16, launched in October 2009, is an online journal about books and writers, sponsored by Humanities Tennessee, the state affiliate of both the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. We cover novels set here; histories involving Tennessee events or locations; authors who live here, were born or educated here; and out-of-state writers when they give readings or participate in book signings anywhere in the state. New content appears daily, and we offer our reviews and interviews free to newspapers in the state in a publication agreement modeled on both Pro Publica's and Ted Kooser's American Life in Poetry project. You can find it all at Chapter16.org.

In the past year we have covered the literary landscape as thoroughly as we know how, and we're ready now to launch an extensive push to build relationships with others who are committed to the community of readers around the country. We already include a list of links to Tennessee-specific literary magazines and publishers, but we'd like to expand that list dramatically to include national book bloggers and Tennessee author sites. Would you be interested in a link exchange? Or would you be willing to post a banner or button linking your site to ours?

    With thanks,
    Kevin
Vanderbilt University graduate student and Chapter 16 intern

    Hi Michelle,

Looks like you have your hands really full. I was amazed at the amount of books you go through and still able to give detailed reviews. With all the detail and time you put into it you should just write a book yourself.

Anyways, I am just wondering if you would consider reviewing my e-book. It's a quick and entertaining read with well-developed characters. Everyone that has read it has loved it. It's published to Amazon.com and Barnsandnoble.com. I need more professional reviews though. If you would consider taking the time to read my e-book, I'll just email a copy to you via amazon.com or barnsandnoble.com whichever fits better for you.

Sorry for the length of this comment, but here is a quick blurb about my book if you'd like to know more:

Black-Hearted is the most feared pirate on the Eastern Atlantic. Captain Daniel Stirvin is the most revered and courageous captain in the Queen's Royal Navy. As Black-Hearted and Captain Stirvin get closer to the inevitable battle that will leave only one man standing, a past is uncovered that will leave both men regretting the unseen outcome. With love, brotherhood, loyalty and betrayal, Port of Errors is an epic adventure that doesn't stop moving.

  • Hey Michelle!

I just ran across your blog and decided to contact you about my new philanthropic organization called Gone Reading International.

We market a line of unique gifts for readers and donate 100% of the profits to fund new libraries in the developing world. You can read more about us at http://www.GoneReading.com , or I can email a short "about us" document.

Any chance you can mention us in your blog???

We're finding that readers love what we're doing, but spreading the word on a philanthropic budget is a challenge! Let me know what you think, and thanks in advance for your time.

    Regards,

    Brad

P.S. As thanks for a mention, I'm more than happy to list you on our "blogs we love" page. Just let me know...

  • Hi Michele,

I'd like to send you a review copy of my novel, Chain Gang Elementary, a tale of war between parents and administrators at a fictional suburban public school. It's funny. It's not so funny. Think of it as One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest for public education. It could also double as a textbook on how NOT to conduct parent-administrator relationships.

Call it my revenge for being forced to read Lord of the Flies in high school.

You may be especially interested in this short excerpt on standardized testing: "Elementary Madness: The Standard Hightower Intellachievement Test: http://chaingangelementary.com/?p=384 .

While it may seem that the plot has been ripped from today's headlines--PTA embezzlement, testing scandals, diversity/immigration issues, zero tolerance fails, and culture wars--this book has been many years in the making.

I've included cover art and an author bio. You can read a news release and author Q&A on the book's website: http://chaingangelementary.com/?p=719 (Q&A) or http://chaingangelementary.com/?p=744 (news release). While you're there, check out the Chain Gang Blog, my Darwin Awards-like take on crime, education, public policy, and whatever else I find weirdly fascinating.

I'm an Atlanta writer, the co-author and editor of an award-winning history book: The Way It Was in the South, which won a Georgia Book of the Year award and was picked as Editors' Choice by American Heritage.

Please let me know if you're interested in the book, and whether you'd prefer paperback or digital format (please include mailing address for paperback).

I look forward to hearing from you.

Dissident parents revolt, electing Richard to head the Parent-Teacher Organization, and tensions explode. Welcome to Chain Gang Elementary, home to vast right-wing conspiracies, 3rd-grade gangsters, and bake sale embezzlers-where toxic childhood secrets boil over, reformers go stark raving mad, and culture wars escalate into armed conflict.

  • I see that several other authors have done what I thought of doing, namely asking via comments whether you would review or mention their books. I don't see any responses to those requests. If you don't already have a Review Policy posted (which I must have missed, if you do), it might be more efficient for you, as well as helpful to visitors, if you'd put one up. I'd certainly love to know whether you're currently open to review copies of ebooks!

  • Hi, I was hoping you would be interested in reviewing my book which has had outstanding reviews so far. EVERY parent, grandparent, spouse/partner, educator and small business owner should read this book. Check out the link and let me know if you'd be interested in a free copy. It's about a 3-4 hour read.

Besides the excellent reviews on "Amazon Top Reviewers", the following are reviews I've received prior to publishing with the first being the sister of the late Nicole Brown-Simpson:

"I feel that Travis Morgan has created a book that is simple to read with a purpose and focus that is beneficial to all. I feel this book is an excellent resource for parents of any aged children. It shows how to actively monitor computer usage as well as tips for discussing certain issues/behaviors with a child. Additionally, the book encourages an open communication between spouses regarding on-line behaviors. It is a particularly good read for anybody who is not computer savvy.
As an educator and a parent, I would recommend this book as a great resource for anybody wanting to learn how to monitor internet and on-line activity of your child."
